The explosion of new technologies has given rise to exponential growth in data traffic through our networks; therefore those networks must be transformed in order to provide a better, more agile and dynamic response.
Thus, for example, through augmented reality, virtual reality, robotics or blockchain, connections will increase from the current 20 million devices to around 75 million in 2025.
The basis of our business is connectivity, constructed over many years and with different technologies. How can we make it more up-to-date and efficient?
The networks of the future are radically different from those that have existed up to now. Telefónica is transforming and getting ready to lead the change.
Thanks to the virtualisation of the network, our physical infrastructure (cables, base stations, fibre, etc.) becomes “liquid” Network. We thus gain in flexibility, speed and quality of the response.
That permits both the constant, intensive use of data on our networks and the offer of digital and customised services. With services in the cloud, the Internet of Things or edge computing becoming increasingly important.
We manage our Network through modular information systems and cloud processes which make it more flexible, scalable and agile. In addition, the use of Artificial Intelligence enables us to anticipate demand and attend to our customers in real time from a 360-degree vision.
Through the UNICA programme, we are the leaders in the area of Telco Cloud.
In 2018, we launched UNICA in 11 countries and 2 global centres. Telefónica is the leader in its sector in network virtualisation, as reported by Analysys Mason in its “Telco Cloud Index 2018”:
The transformation of the Network and the digitalisation of the processes have made it possible to place the customer at the very centre of the Telefónica Network.
The aim of that process of change is to improve our customers’ experience, from the first contact.
In that way, we can offer them a true digital experience.
E2E DIGITALIZATION: THE CUSTOMER AT THE CENTRE
We achieved our 2020 targets two years early
ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE TARGETS 2015-2020/2030
GLOBAL ENERGY AND EMISSIONS TARGETS 2015-2020
The main environmental aspects of the Network are the consumption of energy and the recycling of waste, although we manage all of our possible impacts such as noise and water consumption.
